Community Nursing & Health Visiting Teams

Hinchingbrooke Healthcare NHS Trust employ Community Nurses and Health Visitors who are attached to various practices throughout the region. The Spinney is fortunate in that our community team is based at the Spinney Surgery which provides an excellent opportunity for regular communication and optimising patient care.

Together they provide an excellent service to patients who are unable to attend the surgery. They are ably assisted by Julia Garside who provides a District Nursing Assistant role.

The role of District Nursing Assistant has changed a great deal in the last few years. Julia is able to assist our Community Nurses by undertaking catheter care, dressings and bandaging, enemas, pressure and stoma care. They take blood samples and assist with diabetic care monitoring and many other aspects of home monitoring.

Dietetic Services

Sandy Evans Sandy Evans has offered in-house dietetic services at the Spinney for many years. Appointments are usually in the afternoon on three Tuesdays a month. Priority is given to patients who are newly diagnosed diabetics and patients with coronary heart disease risks. Sandy supports many of the Spinney Patient Education Evenings and is planning to develop weight loss management groups to assist patients who are losing weight for medical purposes.

Counselling Services

Counselling Services were introduced when the practice became 'Fundholding' in 1994. The service continued when fundholding ceased however it is possible that a review by the Primary Care Trust may result in a reduction in services. Current Counsellors at the Spinney are Traute Paulin and Esra Gurkan. Patients are referred to the Counselling Service by their GP.

Esra is on maternity leave until January 2010, Bruce Tate will be increasing his counselling commitment to the Surgery. We have recently taken on a new student counsellor, Jude Dugan who will be with us for about a year.
